Lacey was born to my nephew Christopher and his partner Lisa. She was fit and healthy and doing well until 30 December when she was slightly unwell, however after a short while her parents realised that something was wrong. Lacey was taken to Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow, one of the best around, however given her age and the strain of meningitis she had contracted there was nothing they could do to save her, the meningcocal septicaemia overwhelmed her small body and she passed away on New Years' Eve 2008. Christopher and Lisa have good days and bad days, hopefully they will get through this together. Love you always and forever Lacey. x

Life hasnt been the same without you. I think of you everyday, my love for you grows more each day. I miss you more than ever, i miss your smile and your wee laugh :( i miss your tiny hands & feet. I miss everything about you Lacey. I wish i could turn back the clock just to spend one min with you. My heart is broken, i have so many questions & no one to answer them !! Iβd like to thank you all for coming this morning β I know it means a lot to Lisa and Chris.
I think we are all struggling with this; struggling with the news and our reaction to it and struggling now with feelings of inadequacy β unsure of what to do or what to say to bring comfort to ourselves and each other. Whilst death comes as the end - the only certainty for all of us β it is never without pain and grief for those who are left behind. How we deal with this pain depends greatly on our ability to come to terms with our loss, to rationalise it, and to begin to understand it.
Whilst some losses are easier to come to terms with than others, to lose someone so young seems an impossibly bitter pill to swallow. As difficult as it is for us, it is even more so for Lisa and Chris whose world has overnight been turned upside down.
How do you begin to come to terms with the loss of one so young, so dear and so loved? Lisa and Chris believe that God has bigger plans for Lacey, she is needed elsewhere to share her love, joy and happiness. I think all of us here would connect with that sentiment and although it may not fully answer the questions we are all asking, hopefully it will provide some understanding and some much needed comfort.
My niece Lisa is 20, so young to have to deal with any loss but especially so the loss of your own child. Both she and Chris have shown so much strength, dignity and maturity over these difficult weeks that they are an example to us all and we should all be hugely proud of them.
When I was trying to find the words for this morning I came across this poem which hopefully reflects some of Chris and Lisaβs thoughts and feelings at this time:
Iβll lend you for a little while, a child of mine, God said
For you to love the while she lives and mourn for when sheβs dead.
It may be six or seven years, or not even two or three
But will you, till I call her back, take care of her for me?
Sheβll bring her charms to gladden you and should her stay be brief
Youβll always have her memories as a solace in your grief.
I cannot promise she will stay, since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught below I want this child to learn.
Iβve looked this whole world over in my search for teachers true
And from the folk that crowd Lifeβs lane I have chosen you.
Now will you give her all your love and not think the labour vain,
Nor hate me when I come to take this lent child back again?
I fancy that I heard them say βDear God, thy will be done.
For all the joys this child will bring the risk of grief weβll run.
We will shelter her with tenderness, weβll love her while we may
And for all the happiness weβve ever known, weβll ever grateful stay.
But should the angels call her much sooner than weβd planned
We will brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand."
We believe that Lacey is now in a better place and is with someone who loves her in the most precious of ways. We pray that God will love her and protect her; keep her safe and keep her close.
I want to finish with some words from Lisa and Chris to their daughter Lacey:
Dear Lacey, we feel so proud and privileged to have known you, our daughter, even if for only 3 months; the happiest of months. You are our wee angel β too special to be here in this world, a world which now seems empty without you.
You brought so much happiness to so many people β always laughing and happy.
We know you will be waiting for us and we will be together again β until then you will always be in our hearts β we will never forget you.
